Laval is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is the largest suburb of Montreal, the third largest municipality in the province of Quebec, and the thirteenth largest city in Canada with a population of 422,993 in 2016. Laval is geographically separated from Montreal by the Rivière des Mille Îles, and from the Island of Montreal by the Rivière des Prairies. Laval occupies all of Île Jésus as well as the Îles Laval.
Laval is part of the Greater Montreal area and forms together with several other municipalities one of the six metropolitan regions of Quebec called Montréal Métropolitain.
Laval was historically a rural municipality until it was annexed by the city of Montreal in 1965. It was then reconstituted as a separate municipality in 1980 when it was split off from the Montreal Region. Laval is one of Quebec’s larger cities, with an area of 168.4 square kilometres (65.1 sq mi). Laval is believed to have been named after the Montmorency Falls, which were named after Henri II de Montmorency, Sieur de Laval-Montmorency, who was Governor-General of New France from 1647 to 1657.
Laval is bordered by the Rivière des Mille Îles to the north, the Rivière des Prairies to the east and Saint-Pierre River to the south. Laval occupies an area of 168.4 square kilometres (65.1 sq mi), making it the 14th largest city in Quebec by land area. It is the second most populous suburb of Montreal and one of its fastest-growing cities, with a population growth rate of 5.8% between 2001 and 2006.
Laval is geographically separated from the Island of Montreal by the Rivière des Prairies; however, it has no direct access to the mainland, unlike other suburbs on the South Shore such as Longueuil and Brossard. Laval shares a common border with several adjacent municipalities: Saint-Jérôme to the north, Sainte-Thérèse and Saint-Eustache to the west, and L’Assomption, Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Chomedey and Fabreville to the east. It also borders two unorganized territories in the Laurentians: Morin-Heights and Lacolle.
Laval forms part of the Greater Montreal Metropolitan Community (Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal or CMM), which is a supra-municipal grouping of 82 municipalities covering 1,600 square kilometres (620 sq mi) on the Island of Montreal. Laval is divided into 15 administrative boroughs each with a mayor and city councillor. Laval occupies all of Île Jésus as well as Îles Laval. Laval also comprises all or parts of Les Moulins, Laval-des-Rapides, Laval-Ouest, Laval-sur-le-Lac, Saint-François, Sainte-Rose and Vimont.
