Saguenay is a city in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada, on the Saguenay River, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Quebec City by overland route. It is about 600 kilometres (370 mi) northeast of Montreal and 196 kilometres (122 mi) south of the provincial capital, Quebec City. Chicoutimi was founded by European Canadians in 1842 at the confluence of the Petit Saguenay and Saguenay rivers. It served as a port for the logging industry, which massed lumber downriver from Lac Saint-Jean, although this activity diminished with the arrival of railroads in 1879. The city grew rapidly after World War II due to industrialization and settlement from Montreal along with other cities in Quebec as well as immigrants from northwestern Quebec, northern Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia who were attracted by the growing forestry industry. The city’s economic base is still primarily resource-based, but has diversified somewhat over time; Pulp and paper, aluminum and related manufacturing industries are still important, but chemicals, food processing and other manufacturing have become increasingly significant. The city has also had to adjust its economic base as the forestry industry has changed from being a major employer to only a fraction of the number it once was.
The Saguenay area was first inhabited by Aboriginal peoples notably the Montagnais who hunted in the region. Jacques Cartier’s second voyage to North America on behalf of France took him into Saguenay River where he observed the local people using canoes.[6] By 1535, European fishermen were plying the waters of the river. The French established permanents settlements in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean in 1676 with a mission at Tadoussac. But the area turned out to be too much exposed to English and Iroquois attacks from the south so the French abandoned it in 1680.
The area was permanently settled only after the construction of Fort Sainte-Anne, constructed between 1712 and 1714 by order of Philippe de Vaudreuil, then Governor General of New France. The fort served to protect against English invasions from Hudson Bay and prevent French expansion into Iroquois territory under the terms of a peace treaty with them. It was also used as a trading post. The same year another fort was built on the north shore at present-day Baie-Saint-Paul to counter any threat from the English on that side.
